Significance; likes and dislikes
Baron de Montesquieu was a very brilliant french political philosopher. He believed that all things were made up of rules or laws that never changed. He set out to study these laws scientifically with the hope that knowledge of the laws of government would reduce the problems of society and improve human life. According to Montesquieu, there were infact three types of government: a monarchy (ruled by a king or queen), a republic (ruled by an elected leader), and a dictatorship (ruled by a dictator).(EBSCO, Swygart) Montesquieu believed that a government that was elected by the people was the best form of government. He did, however, believe that the success of a democracy depended upon maintaining the correct balance of power.
One thing that I liked about Montesquieu was that he was a logical thinking man. He made decisions and came up with his own explainations for how the world functioned.
On the other hand, I disliked how he only accepted his own answers for situations that he didn't truely comprehend. Also, i found it hypocritical that he believed in the principles of a democracy, he did not feel that all people were equal, this was because he approved of slavery.(EBSCO, Weatherman)
